pssentEducation and training is yet another integral component of Parivar Seva. Through different approaches, which include inter-personal communication (IPC), outdoor promotion and mass media, awareness is created amongst different target groups about different aspects of reproductive health and availability of quality and affordable reproductive health services. Generic messages on issues such as safe motherhood, child care, family planning (both reversible and irreversible methods), male responsibility, safety and legality of abortions, gynaecological problems and their solution, prevention of HIV/AIDS, family life education (including sex education), nutrition, hygiene, sanitation are being promoted. This intervention primarily includes activities in the field amongst the community as well as health camps organised at the community level. Clinical services are provided through referrals to the nearest Parivar Seva clinics or the government health facility

The educational programme aims at imparting reproductive and sexual health education to different target audiences such as school/college going adolescents, out-of-school/youth, community men and women as well as industrial workers. Intensive training of service providers such as Anganwadi workers/ supervisors, ASHAs, ANMs, NGO workers and doctors in the private sector is done, so as to equip them with correct knowledge on various reproductive health issues, so that they in turn can offer better guidance and services to their clients. Training of Trainers has been a prime focus of the E & T units so that awareness and education is transferred to a large number of health personnel.

Education and Training (E&T) Unit came into existence with the goal of awareness generation, building capacities and providing education and training to beneficiaries on the necessary skills of living a happy, comfortable and healthy life. The objective is to help people to educate and enable them to maintain their reproductive and sexual health and take informed choices to plan their family to lead a healthy productive life.

E&T units of Parivar Seva conduct education and awareness programmes, life skill education and training and organize health camps. These programmes are conducted with a wide range of people i.e. school population, school dropouts, college students, men and women, factory workers, truckers, frontline workers like ASHA, ANM, AWW and NGO functionaries etc. With its trained professionals and excellent linkage with experts from various fields, Parivar Seva has the potential to develop modules, mobilise resource persons and deliver as per the need of the target audience. The key packages provided by E&T division are as follows:

Youth Friendly Services (YFS)

pss
YFS Centre called Aadhar was established in Jawahar Nagar slum of Jaipur Rajasthan in 2005 in partnership with UNFPA as a pilot project with the aim to prevent HIV/AIDS and unwanted pregnancies amongst unmarried and married adolescents and youth. Though the pilot was completed in 18 months, Parivar Seva, with its own resources, continued to provide Aadhar-youth friendly services for many years in the same location. In 2015, the project moved to another phase, with the establishment of smaller units in three additional locations, covering additional slums in Jaipur as well as changing the working strategy.

Aadhar centres have also been established in other district headquarters of Rajasthan, in slums of Ajmer and Kota, where a large number of adolescents and youth are attending the programme.

Objectives
Improve and impart correct and scientific knowledge, attitudes and behavior in relation to Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH).
i)  Encourage to marry only after the legally eligible age.
ii) Reduce teenage pregnancies.
iii) To reduce the incidence of reproductive tract infection/sexual tract infection in adolescent age groups and      educate them on these diseases.
iv) To improve the availability and utilisation of contraceptives to address the unmet needs of the youth and adults.
v)  To improve menstrual hygiene knowledge, management and practices.
vi)  Reduce prevalence of malnutrition among adolescent girls and boys.
vii) Reduce prevalence of iron-deficiency anaemia (IDA) among adolescent girls.

Strategies/interventions to achieve objectives can be broadly grouped as:

A. Community based interventions

     1. Formation of Active Peer Educator groups
     2. Conduct Adolescent Health Days (AHDs)
     3. Conduct Weekly Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation Programme (WIFS)
     4. Conduct awareness sessions on different issues related to adolescents/youth

B. Facility based interventions
     1. Strengthening of Adolescent Friendly Health Clinics
     2. Referrals to Parivar Seva clinics & Government set ups

C. Networking with GOs/NGOs
Networking of YFS centers with other programmes by involvement  with the Government and NGOs for implementation of their programmes addressing issues related to youth like RKSK, NACP, National Tobacco Control Programme, National Mental Health Programme, WCD (ICDS, KSY, BSY, SABLA), Youth Affairs and Sports (Adolescent Empowerment Scheme, National Service Scheme, NYKS, NPYAD).

D. Social and Behaviour Change Communication with focus on Inter-Personal Communication

E.  Career Counseling
This service is added on a periodic basis to encourage adolescents and youth to pursue the right career for them.

F. Imparting Vocational training to the adolescents and youth from the urban slums
.
Since the adolescents and youth are shy to visit the YFS centers to learn about SRH issues and are mostly reluctant to openly avail services pertaining to SRH, this component has been added so as to attract the adolescents and youth to visit the center. The opportunity is taken to build a rapport with them and also instill a sense of security that services provided would be confidential. Addition of vocational training and enhancement of skills has greatly helped YFS to reach a large number of adolescents and youth.

Target populations

  • The direct beneficiaries are people of reproductive age group, adolescents and youth, both unmarried and married and especially young women.
  • The indirect beneficiaries are family members, friends of the direct beneficiaries and community leaders and members surrounding the direct beneficiaries.
